where to drink
The west coast is not Funchal. The evenings are slower, the options fewer, the quality higher when you find the right ones. Sunset bars on the seafront, tiki cocktails above Calheta, and the island's traditional drink in a plain room with locals.
sunset and evening
Pukiki Tiki Bar
Estreito da CalhetaThe largest rum selection on Madeira, cocktails that are genuinely exceptional, and a story worth knowing. "Pukiki" is what Hawaiians called the Madeirans who emigrated in 1878 to work the sugar plantations. The couple who run it have worked hard to bring their dream to life and you feel it. If you walk down, book a taxi back before 9pm.
Maktub
Paul do MarThe west-side sunset destination, a minute's walk from Saboramar. A touch louder and more social than its neighbour Bar da Pedra. Drink in hand, ocean horizon, the day closing down.
Bar da Pedra
Paul do MarThe quieter pick next to Maktub. Same sunset, same ocean, different register. Both within a minute's walk of each other.
Sunspot Cafe
Ponta do SolDaytime through sunset, casual, seafront. Prego or a burger, beer in hand. The place we've stretched plenty of late afternoons without meaning to.
Calhau Beach Club
Saccharum Resort, Arco da CalhetaThe closest beach club to Casa Amani. Tropical Beats DJ afternoons and Fire Pit dinners on Friday, Saturday, Sunday evenings in summer. Day-passes available even if you're not staying at the hotel.
poncha
Poncha is Madeira's drink: sugar cane rum, lemon or other citrus, honey. Every village has its own version; every poncha bar has its own opinion. Worth treating as its own category because the experience is distinctly Madeiran.
Poncha do Emanuel
Arco da CalhetaOur neighbourhood spot, a few minutes by car. The signature is poncha de alecrim, a rosemary infusion we haven't found anywhere else. Plain room, locals at the bar, the right amount of late-afternoon weight.
Poncha do Lombo do Doutor
Near Arco da CalhetaA short drive from us, worth stopping on the way back from somewhere else. Adventurous flavour range: passion fruit, tangerine, eucalyptus, others depending on what's in season.
events and community
Purple Fridays
Ponta do SolWhere the Madeira digital-nomad community gathers every Friday night. Membership required, but if you're staying long enough that a few Fridays will pass, it pays for itself in introductions. Ponta do Sol is 15 minutes from Casa Amani.
Doca do Cavacas
FunchalThe Wednesday-night summer party we keep going back to. Drive in, dinner-then-dancing, the kind of evening that runs late. Worth the trip even outside summer for the dinner alone: good seafood, good wine list, right on the water.
common questions
What is poncha?+
Poncha is Madeira's traditional drink, made from sugar cane rum (aguardente de cana), lemon or other citrus, and honey. Every village has its own version. Poncha do Emanuel in Arco da Calheta, a few minutes from Casa Amani, makes a rosemary-infused poncha that is worth the visit.
Is there nightlife on the west coast of Madeira?+
The west coast is quieter than Funchal, but it has its own rhythm. Paul do Mar has sunset bars (Maktub, Bar da Pedra), Estreito da Calheta has Pukiki Tiki Bar, and Calhau Beach Club at Saccharum runs DJ afternoons and Fire Pit dinners in summer. For bigger nights, Doca do Cavacas in Funchal is 45 minutes by car.
Where can I watch the sunset near Calheta?+
Paul do Mar is the go-to: Maktub and Bar da Pedra sit right on the seafront, facing west. Sunspot Cafe in Ponta do Sol is another good option. Both are within 15 minutes of Casa Amani.
